Example Problem:

Convert to quarts (1 gallon = 4 quarts):

(5 × 4) + 2 = 22 quarts

(3 × 4) + 3 = 15 quarts

Subtract: 22 - 15 = 7 quarts or 1 gallon 3 quarts remain.

Question: The Statue of Liberty stands 151 feet 1 inch tall. Now, imagine a new pedestal is being added to increase its height by 27 feet 10 inches. How tall will the statue be in total? Let’s find out!

Solution:

We need to add the two heights:

151 feet 1 inch + 27 feet 10 inches

Add the inches: 1 inch + 10 inches = 11 inches

Add the feet: 151 feet + 27 feet = 178 feet

So, the total height will be 178 feet 11 inches!

Real-World Application:

Baking: A recipe needs 3 quarts of milk, but you only have pints. How many pints do you need? (1 quart = 2 pints)

Sports: A runner completes 2 miles 700 yards in a race. How far is that in total yards? (1 mile = 1,760 yards)
