Find the value of digit in place value.
Find the value of digit in place value.
Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
Learning Outcomes:
    • Students can understand and recognize the place value of each digit in multi-digit numbers (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.).
    • Students will identify different place values in numbers up to 10,000, helping them see how each position in a number contributes to its overall value.
    • Students can find and explain the place value of a given digit in a number by looking at its position.
    • For example, students can determine that the digit “3” in 3,452 represents 3,000, as it is in the thousands.
    • This will enable students to see numbers not just as collections of digits but as values with different meanings based on their positions.
    • Expand numbers to show the value of each digit (e.g., 4,582 as 4,000 + 500 + 80 + 2).
    • Students will recognize that numbers can be represented in multiple ways and practice converting between expanded and standard forms.
    • Students will be able to use place value skills in real-life situations, such as understanding prices, measurements, and large quantities.
    • For example, students can interpret the place value of numbers on a price tag or a city’s population.
    • This confidence in place value sets a foundation for more complex mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
    • Students can improve their ability to articulate and explain their understanding of numbers, which will support future learning in math.
