Understanding the place value:

Place value is all about understanding what position a digit is in within a number, and how that position changes the digit’s value.

In a 4-digit number, the places from left to right are:

  1. Thousands place
  2. Hundreds place
  3. Tens place
  4. Ones place

Each digit in a number has a different value based on where it is. Let’s look at some examples to understand this better:

When teaching students to use place value understanding for 4-digit numbers, it's essential to focus on how each digit represents a different value (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones) and how this knowledge can be applied to round numbers.

For example:

Example 1: 4,825

Breakdown:
  • Thousands place: 4 → 4,000
  • Hundreds place: 8 → 800
  • Tens place: 2 → 20
  • Ones place: 5 → 5
Place Value Explanation:
  • The 4 in the thousands place means 4,000.
  • The 8 in the hundreds place means 800.
  • The 2 in the tens place means 20.
  • The 5 in the ones place means 5.

So, the number 4,825 is 4,000 + 800 + 20 + 5.

Example 2: 2,936

Breakdown:
  • Thousands place: 2 → 2,000
  • Hundreds place: 9 → 900
  • Tens place: 3 → 30
  • Ones place: 6 → 6
Place Value Explanation:
  • The 2 in the thousands place means 2,000.
  • The 9 in the hundreds place means 900.
  • The 3 in the tens place means 30.
  • The 6 in the ones place means 6.

So, the number 2,936 is 2,000 + 900 + 30 + 6.

Example 3: 7,104

Breakdown:
  • Thousands place: 7 → 7,000
  • Hundreds place: 1 → 100
  • Tens place: 0 → 0
  • Ones place: 4 → 4
Place Value Explanation:
  • The 7 in the thousands place means 7,000.
  • The 1 in the hundreds place means 100.
  • The 0 in the tens place means 0.
  • The 4 in the ones place means 4.

So, the number 7,104 is 7,000 + 100 + 0 + 4.
