Rounding Numbers up to the Hundred.
Rounding Numbers up to the Hundred.
Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

  • Students will be able to explain that rounding means adjusting a number to the nearest multiple of a given place value (in this case, the nearest 100) for easier calculations or estimation.
  • Students will recognize that when rounding to the nearest hundred, the key digit to look at is the tens place.
  • Students will apply the rule that if the tens digit is 5 or more, they round up; if it is less than 5, they round down.
  • Students will successfully round three-digit numbers (e.g., rounding 462 to 500) by applying the appropriate rounding rule.

Rounding numbers to the nearest hundred:

is finding the closest multiple of 100 to a given number. When rounding to the nearest hundred, we focus on the tens digit to determine whether to round up or down.

How to round to the nearest hundred:

  1. Identify the ten digit of the number.
  2. If the tens digit is 5 or more, round up by increasing the hundreds digit by 1, and changing the tens and ones digits to 0.
  3. If the tens digit is less than 5, round down by keeping the hundreds digit the same and changing the tens and one's digits to 0.
