A set is a well-defined collection of things. That one sentence carries the whole topic: if everyone agrees what belongs in the collection, it is a set, and if people would argue about it, it is not. Grade 6 is where children first learn to sort the world this way.
I have taught Grade 6 math for over thirty years, and sets click fastest through daily life: birthdays, toy boxes and classrooms. Below is the lesson exactly as I teach it, with a free worksheet at the end.
What Is a Set?
A set is a collection of things that is clearly defined, so nobody argues about what belongs in it. The set of months in a year passes the test, because the twelve months are fixed. The set of beautiful flowers fails the test, because beauty is a matter of opinion. If the membership is not clear to everyone, the collection is not a set.
Try the test yourself. The set of vowels in the word “cat” passes, because there is only one vowel, a. The set of tall students fails, because nobody agrees where tall begins. The set of days in a week passes, because the seven days are fixed. The things in a set are called its elements, or members, and we write a set inside curly braces, like this: {a, e, i, o, u}.
What Is a Finite Set?
A finite set is a set you can finish counting. The set of days in a week has 7 members, the set of months in a year has 12, and the set of vowels in the word “cat” has just 1, the letter a. Countable and finished, that is finite.
Look around the classroom and you will find finite sets everywhere: the students in a class, the colours on a traffic light, and the letters in the word MOON, written {M, O, N}. Notice that O is written only once, even though it appears twice in the word. In a set, each member is listed once. For extra practice, try my free Understanding Sets Worksheet for Grade 6.
What Is an Empty Set?
An empty set is a set with no members at all, written {}. The set of months with 32 days is empty, because no month has 32 days. The set of dragons in your classroom is empty too, for a happier reason. Empty means zero members, not a broken set.
Mathematicians also write an empty set with a crossed-out zero symbol, but in Grade 6 the braces {} do the job, and they are what I ask my students to use.
What Is a Singleton Set?
A singleton set is a set with exactly one member. The set {0} has one member, the number 0. The set {Pakistan} has one member, the country. One member, no more and no less, that is singleton.
Here is the trap I warn every class about: {0} is NOT an empty set. Count the members. Zero members means empty. One member means singleton. So, is the set of moons of Earth empty or singleton? It is a singleton set, because Earth has exactly one moon.
What Is an Infinite Set?
An infinite set is a set that never ends. The counting numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, …} go on forever, and the three dots mean exactly that: keep going, there is no last member. You cannot finish counting an infinite set, and that is the whole point.
Play the largest-counting-number game with your child: whatever number she names, you can always name one more. That is why the counting numbers are infinite. The multiples of 2, {2, 4, 6, 8, …}, are infinite too, and so are the points on a line.
Sorting Sets at a Glance
Sorting a set takes two questions: is it clearly defined, and can you finish counting it? Clearly defined and countable means finite. Clearly defined with zero members means empty. Clearly defined with one member means singleton. Clearly defined and uncountable means infinite. Not clearly defined means it is not a set at all.
| Kind | Members | One example |
|---|---|---|
| Finite | Countable, more than one | Days of the week |
| Empty | Zero | Months with 32 days |
| Singleton | Exactly one | {0} |
| Infinite | Never ends | Counting numbers |
I keep this table on the board for the whole lesson. When a child is stuck, I point to the two questions and let her sort the set herself.
Mistakes I See Every Year
Mistake one: calling {0} an empty set. Count the members: 1 means singleton, not empty.
Mistake two: calling an opinion-based collection a set, like the set of best singers. Run the agreement test first: if people would argue about membership, it is not a set.
Mistake three: writing a set without braces, or listing a member twice. Think of braces as walls, and give each member one invitation only.
One habit prevents all three: ask the two sorting questions in order, clearly defined first, then can you finish counting it?
Try It Yourself: 3 Quick Questions
Cover the answers, let your child try, then check together.
- Is the set of prime numbers between 10 and 20 finite or infinite?
Answer: finite: 11, 13, 17, 19. - A bag holds only one red ball. Is that set empty or singleton?
Answer: singleton. - Is “good books” a set?
Answer: no, because “good” is a matter of opinion, so the collection is not well-defined.
Key Takeaways
- A set is a well-defined collection, written inside curly braces {}.
- Finite sets end, empty sets hold nothing, singleton sets hold one member, and infinite sets never end.
- {0} is a singleton set, not an empty set.
- If people would argue about membership, the collection is not a set.
- Two questions sort any set: is it clearly defined, and can you finish counting it?
If your child handled those three questions, she is ready for a full page of practice. Print the free Understanding Sets Worksheet for Grade 6 and sit with her for the first two questions only. You will be surprised how quickly she takes over.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a set in simple words?
A set is a well-defined collection of things, written inside curly braces. The set of months in a year is a set, because the twelve months are fixed.
What is a well-defined set?
A set is well-defined when everyone agrees about what belongs in it. The set of vowels in the word “cat” is well-defined, because it contains only a. The set of beautiful flowers is not well-defined, because beauty is a matter of opinion.
What is an empty set?
An empty set is a set with no members at all, written {}. The set of months with 32 days is empty, because no month has 32 days.
Is {0} an empty set?
No. The set {0} has one member, the number 0, so it is a singleton set, not an empty set.
What is the difference between a finite and an infinite set?
A finite set can be finished counting, like the days of the week, which has 7 members. An infinite set never ends, like the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, …}.
